Grandfather's Rocking Chair
Straight from the workshop
Freshly sanded, adorned with bow
His callused hands thirsting
To impress, to show
His love
Fast forward and the smooth bum-bum, bum-bum
A comforting rhythm, the hearth of home
Back and forth she rocked
Baby close, to hold
A cooing dove
Now scratched and torn
Used and worn
The kid on his phone
Alone, is the home
A wayward shove
Back and forth a pendulum,
Swinging.
Choc full of memories, laughter,
Singing
Wooden, lovely, creaking, light
Velvet, homey, day and night
Back to the time of rosy cheeks
And curly hair
A measure of time
Ever present, ever stable, ever there
Made with love
Grandfather’s Rocking Chair
