Falling
His presence is constant.
Always there,
Never threatening.
My protector,
My savior.
When I fall,
He catches me.
Nothing can hurt me.
I reach out,
Searching for him.
My hand catches nothing but air.
Shock courses through me.
He can’t be gone,
He promised to stay,
No matter what.
But the proof is right in front of me,
Starring me in the face,
Mocking me.
The reality of it hits me.
I feel a sharp burning sensation,
It starts in my chest,
And spreads,
Eventually reaching
The rest of my body.
The fire consumes me.
I look down,
Expecting to see a dagger poking out of my chest,
But there is nothing.
The pain is relentless,
Unbearable.
As soon as it started,
It stops.
Numbness replaces it,
Forcing me to move on.
However,
I am not the person I used to be.
The numbness follows,
Wherever I go.
An empty shell is all that remains.
