How Did You Know?
When you looked at me, you saw it.
And I have no idea how.
You walked right up and
Told me, “We need to talk now.”
You saw something about me
That no one else could see.
You asked me how I could not do it,
And I saw wonder in your gaze at me.
I told you I made a promise.
One I wouldn’t dare break.
Because I only knew one thing:
I had too much at stake.
I stopped because I had to.
I had no other choice.
I no longer had the luxury
Of choosing my own voice.
You asked if I still want to do it.
To which I had to say,
I’d be lying if I didn’t.
I think about it each and every day.
I know how difficult this is for you.
I can see it in your eyes.
Don’t worry because I’ve been there, too.
Please heed my advice.
I look at you and say,
“Don’t do this to yourself—it doesn’t have to be this way.
Get it through your little head:
You’re not a dusty book pushed away.”
I stared at you in wonder,
What happened to cause all your pain?
Because I know it’s something real,
Not some petty little game.
Someone must have really hurt you,
For you to turn to this.
But why would someone do that,
It must have been one big diss.
I understand your feelings,
It’s like you have no control.
I feel the same emotions,
Like someone else has the starring role.
The difficulty about it is,
We feel there’s no one to help us out.
No one to believe in us,
To stand in our corner and shout,
“You are so much better than this.
Don’t let this ruin your life.
Believe in yourself,
Through all the trouble and the strife.”
But the truth really is,
There is someone there for us.
This topic is just something,
Neither of us wants to discuss.
We have to believe our hurt and pain
Is just a passing faze.
Because if we don’t our lives may,
Just light up in a blaze.
So I only ask one thing,
For you to do for me.
Take my hand and together,
We will be set free.
