A Tie
A tie.
Branding a boy into a man.
A contract that he didn't know he was signing.
He wears it tight,
Choking the playfulness out of him.
Reminding him that he will no longer have an imagination but work for a community where he has no say.
I watch as my daddy wraps it around his neck,
But only my mother can knot it just right.
I used to watch in wonder at the many ties hanging in his closet.
A tie.
Like a collar that he wears to remind him he is no longer a boy.
But that he is a man.
