One Word
Society.
The reason that thousands of girls lack confidence
for people abusing each other with words
the reason why my best friend is beaten by words said to him like a greeting.
Society.
People who define beauty as a size 0 and flawless skin.
We are to blame
we are society.
We are the reason why my little sister of 10 years old has already decided that she’s ugly
or that the 12 year old i babysit has to be watched after meals because she’s convinced that if she were thinner,
Brian would like her back.
Or what about my sisters’ friend who can’t make a 3-pointer so he gets shoved in a locker after the game.
And how is it okay that pounds of makeup is more desirable than blemishes that will be gone in 2 days anyway?
Who decided that judgement of a person is based solely on looks?
What about the boy who couldn’t run a mile under 10 minutes,
the girl who didn’t have the hourglass figure,
and all those teenagers with blemishes not only on the faces but in their lives because sometimes they feel nothing at all and get labeled as
“pill poppers”.
Who decided that this means they aren’t beautiful?
because beauty,
beauty is supposed to come from within, right?
So why do we deem it necessary to define beauty
who is we
and why are they able to come up with this profound definition of beauty
based on the measurements of a waist and features on a face?
Why do people have to look a certain way?
And does nobody else see the problem arising that people don’t think they’re worth anything at all
or that small children are declaring themselves ugly
because they don’t look like people on the covers of magazines
all because of
1 word:
society.
