The Stage
Ever since I was young, I loved the stage.
I loved being the center of attention,
the star.
And I love the makeup, the costumes,
the beauty.
Now I am backstage,
pulling the softened boxes in my shoes over my callused and blistered feet.
Under the beauty is the pain.
Beneath the costumes is the hours that I have stood alone in the studio and cried because I hated the way I looked.
I hated the hard work.
But as I grace the stage,
little girls in the audience will gasp in awe,
as I sweat and bleed.
I do it for them.
I do it for me.
