Where I'm From
I am from the mulberries that Mom and I picked
staining my feet purple.
I am from the kite that wrapped around my neck one day
forever leaving a scar.
I am from the white hydrangeas
which John, Kathy, and I tossed around.
From the intense fear of public speaking
Struggling for air when I begin my speech.
From the anesthesia and surgeons in white coats
Correcting my knees.
From thinking things will always get better
(Whether I believe it or not depends on the day.)
I am from a work ethic, being on time, and staying healthy
these are the values I’ve been taught.
I am from the smell of chai brewing in the afternoons
deep, rich, and full of spices.
I am from the day the doctors said my sister was going to die
but she deemed a medical miracle.
From getting bullied at school
launching me into a daily turmoil.
From the first anxiety attack
delegating me to be afraid and helpless.
From the hospital
where they gave me a meaning to live.
I am from my own strengths.
I am from my desire to keep going.
I am from the idea that “it will be alright”.
From my past
transforming me into the person I am today.
