Midnight People
When they said:
“moonlight drowns out all but the brightest stars,”
I took that to mean that the best people are revealed at night;
and in the darkest of times.
The people who call you at midnight:
just to make sure you are okay--
those are the ones you should love.
By this standard,
I should love Ben.
And he should still love me.
Because he called me at 1am,
when we were still dating,
just to make sure I was still breathing.
He would miss my voice if he had not heard it in awhile;
he would whisper my name to make sure I would still respond.
And now that he doesn't call anymore:
I wish he did.
Those calls meant so much to me--
to hear his voice relieved once he heard mine,
and to feel the evenness of his breathing calm mine.
Just to be with him,
even if it was over the phone:
it felt so amazing.
And now,
there is nothing left of us--
and the love we had.
I realize he was a star in the darkness,
lighting me up from the inside.
And I just need that light again.
I need midnight people:
who will call me to hear my voice.
I need the ones
who
delight
in
my
very
existence.

Inspired by the quote: “moonlight drowns out all but the brightest stars.” Stick by the ones who stay by your side when the sun is shining, but also when darkness enfolds. Stick by your midnight people. :) <3
