Our Minds

Wouldn't it be nice, for you to hold me in your arms?

Wouldn't it be nice, if you loved us not for our bodies,

but for our minds?

for our kindness and our courage and our curiosity,

for our little unexpected bursts of laughter,

and our rare, blinding smiles

that travel from our lips to our eyes to our love of

everything there is,

these possibilities that quiver on a dandelion's wind.

Blow us, scatter little white clouds of wishes as we close our eyes.

Can't you see what you have taught us from the very beginning,

little girls and their Barbie dolls,

the songs they overhear on the blaring, subcontious music of the radio.

And what if we changed the words?

Because this is not how you fall in love,

this is how you exist in short, heated moments,

tangled sheets and no desire to love forever,

only today, today, today.

What if we shattered the mirrors, and the screens of the television,

and showed you that the broken pieces of glass

were all the same illusion anyway,

the same models and editing and false perfection?

Wouldnt I like to match up,

my reflection in the mirror,

and the image you have drilled into our minds.

What if she can sing?

What if she runs three miles every morning just because she can?

What if she is so smart she beats you at chess every single time?

What if you opened your eyes, and saw us?

Maybe then we would be less disappointed with ourselves.

I want you to grab my hand,

and together we can argue about science and literature

and the great mysteries of the universe.

What if you loved me

for my mind?
