Sometimes I feel like I keep dying

Feel like I’m leaving myself behind
I seek to be positive, believe that I’m trying
I tell myself that there are new adventures to find

So I keep on seeking new tales to tell
With hope that I’ll make something of myself
Hope that I’ll be able to ring the bell
And be more than a picture on a dusty shelf

So I’ll endure, endeavor, and adventure
I’ll learn to be unafraid of being afraid
I’ll keep writing new pages until I wear dentures
And look back on the progress I’ve made

And so I’ll do all of this and more
I’ll sit back and enjoy the long drive
I’ll look forward to what new journeys have in store
Because I simply love being alive

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem for a school assignment. We were supposed to replicate another poet's work. I chose "The Lesson" by Maya Angelou. She wrote about how she was growing old, but she's willing to grow old because she loves being alive. Taking the last line of this poem, I created my own poem about moving forward with my life. This can be especially hard for me because I suffer from anxiety disorder. I am often intimidated by going into the unknown.
