Dive heart first into concrete
Swallow the guilt whole
Crack your knuckles
Drink gasoline
And put a cigarette out
On dried and crumbling lips
Scratch at your eyes so they’re dull and fragile
Like broken hands hanging loose
after every broken pinky promise
And every fake “I love you too”
Smile sweetly with sunken eyes
Put two fingers down your throat
Count flower petals
To find out He Loves You Not
Put two fingers on the trigger and pull
Your heart from your chest
Just to know you can still bleed
Just to know you’re still alive
Just to know a broken person will break you too

The author's comments:

This piece was inspired by years of personal internal struggle as I was growing up. With a distorted view of myself and also my life, things were very dark for a very long time, and sometimes still are. I use "He" in this piece, but more so for the well-known rhyme that goes along with plucking flower petals than for actually thinking of a "he". Yes, this was inspired by a young man I am currently in a relationship with, but no, this is not about him breaking me. This is about me, breaking myself, and breaking those I care for. It's one of my more emotional pieces, and is one I hold dear to my heart for the deep personal meaning it has.
