the town we created
on the solid grey concrete
on the hottest days of the year
surrounded by a semicircle of chalk, cars and sticks
we played in our town
on the streets we created
we drove our matchbox cars
on chalk-paved roads
wheels speeding through stick traffic lights
our fingers played people
living in the the biggest house in town
outlined in shakey chalk lines
with a one-hundred car garage
organized by color, shape and size
we pretended we were all grown up
in this town that we constructed
omnipotent adults
we pretended to be
in the town we created
with our childish toys
