Woodpecker
God knows She made me a bird,
but if I am to be a bird,
let me be a woodpecker,
with strong, flapping
wings
and a sharp beak:
a bird a man can hold in his hands
- with caution -
if she lets him.

This piece was inspired by a bird bander who told me he was more apprehensive to hold the little downy woodpeckers than any other bird, because of their pointed beaks.
