Where I am From
I am from the large circle stepping stones,
From Cuties and Kraft.
I am from the white brick house,
Small and plain.
It sounded as if there were four deranged monsters running about.
I am from the magnolias, the orange trees whose fruit I would pick with my brother and my grandmother.
I’m from the chaotic Thanksgiving dinners and peaceful Christmas eve nights,
From Mattie and Lee and Selena.
I’m from the over involved and the lovers of art,
From if you can’t fall asleep say your prayers and tomorrow will be a better day
I’m from a Catholic home,
With a strong belief in God’s plan.
I’m from St. Bernard and the Canary Islands,
Boiled crabs and crawfish.
From the time when my uncle pushed me through the snow in a box on my first snow day
To the times when my brother would make me help him build clubhouses in the living room.
In the foyer there is a large box,
Containing all of my family’s pictures and memories.
I am from a large, crazy, and chaotic family who accepts me for me.
