Where I'm From
I’m from a creaky yellow wooden house distinctive from the dismal cookie-cutter neighborhood.
Summer family camping trips in the backyard with mosquitos swarming—
two acres containing space for plenty of new memories.
My dad says, “The best part about this life is the adventure of it.”
I’m from a family of three, all beginning with the letter “T”.
Waking up on Christmas morning to the smell of cinnamon rolls—
racing to join the others downstairs.
We learned, “It’s better to give than to receive.”
I’m from hour long bus rides and ripped brown-bag lunches.
Music blaring, the floor of the vehicle vibrating like we’re at a concert—
belting out the lyrics from our favorite songs.
Coach says, “Play hard, work together, and have fun.”
I’m from Sunday morning services and a house full of prayers.
Trying to get along with each sibling—
and wanting to treat others with respect.
In the entryway there’s a quote that says, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
I’m from wanting to mimic my parent’s work ethic.
Working on applications and scholarships until I can’t keep my eyes open—
trying to decide which school is the best fit for me.
“Just do your best,” they say, “that’s all that matters.”
