Delayed Gratification
What comes next?
Seeing the bright blue sky
but not noticing until later
how perfect things were
for the rest of the world
hairs rise
stomachs drop
eyes pool and widen
Adrenaline rushes
and all you can do
is react
Trying to ask yourself what comes next
but it is too unsure of a future
Delayed Gratification
only works
if there is
something to

This piece is about the day I was evicted from my house in Georgia. No warning from my mother, I was woken up by her and the sheriff standing behind her in my home. My emotions completely shut off for a few days. If they wouldn’t have, I would not have made it through that month of homelessness, juggling school and my mother and my brother and overcoming substance abuse as well as other deeply personal issues. I thought everything was absolutely done. But at the same time, my heart and mind completely shut down. I only reacted to the immediate present, which is not the best way to live your life. However, I did this and I learned a lot, probably more than a kid my age should know about.
