This is pretentious.
The five seven five pattern
Seems to restrict thought.

Words substituted,
flow destroyed by altered words,
it is an “art form”.

Topics never change
From flowers to the ocean,
Nature tempts poets.

Eager young poets,
Forced to count syllables,
Misconstrue meaning.

Respect for haikus
Vanishes with each stanza.
Beautiful, but not.

The author's comments:
Students are often forced into writing poetry in an English class. I have seen that many students tend to lean towards a free verse poem, for they may think it will be easier to write. Yet a structured poem, like a haiku, challenges writers to express their feelings under strict guidelines.

A successful poet will utilize a rhyming scheme, rhythm, or syllable pattern to make a poem remarkable and thought-provoking. Those who struggle with structured poetry may misconstrue or even butcher the meaning and thought behind certain words, or the entire poem, in order to follow said guidelines, however.
