Suffering Together

A boy sits on his bed, heart empty and stomach churning.

He sits with his thoughts, from his mistakes he’s not learning.

He tells himself he’s responsible for the pain he’s gone through.

Others tell him that thoughts just are not true.

People ask if he’s okay.

Scared to tell the truth, he shakes them all away.

His phone with no messages, his soul without love.

He lies outside watching the stars above.

How he wishes he could fall into the sky

But does he really want to die?

A girl lays on the ground, angry at herself and wondering why.

Why is this happening to her? Is it worth it anymore to try?

She thinks of what her dad said, things will fix itself.

Not this time dad, your “knowledge” is put on the shelf.

She grabs her phone, her hand shaking from fear.

Will she ever be herself again? Is the end near?

Her mom texts her to come down to eat

She wipes the tears from her eyes, her red cheeks filled with heat.

I’m not hungry mom, I had a big lunch.

She feels like her mom might not care, not a whole bunch.

Where is her happy life? Does she not deserve to live?

Her energy for life is done. Not a drop left to give.

These two have something in common, they both feel alone.

Like they have no asylum, no real home.

They put the hate on themselves, should they though?

After all, there is always someone who understands your woes.

You can’t be so hard on yourself. You deserve the love you get,

Now let me tell you something, and I’ll make this a bet.

Let yourself make mistakes, and take life one day at a time.

This is a life lesson, not just some silly, pointless rhyme.

The author's comments:

I have always struggled with my mental health, and over the years I have found new ways to cope with it, and I find it helpful to know that you don't suffer alone when you feel this way. There is someone that will understand how you feel. I feel as if mental health is not talked about enough. Too many people, especially people my age, suffer in silence regarding mental health. They are often too scared to tell someone. This can be for many reasons, whether it’s fear of getting in trouble or the feeling that they’ll be seen as weak for speaking out. This poem is to show people they are not alone and they shouldn’t feel scared to speak out about this.
