Taking off my coat
It’s gray, the sky above me, face despond
It’s gray, the ground below me, frigid sight
It’s gray, the trees around me, winter’s plight
Rocks settle in my mind, I trudge beyond
Salt and slush, slips and shuffles, I’m not fond
Of darkness at 4, blot out the last light
My coat’s a snake it coils and pulls too tight
“Look, there’s snow outside!” I do not respond.
But wait, look over there! A sprout of green
So hopeful in the air, surrounded by
The frosty bite of snow, soon gone that fiend
Will be. Smiles grow, coat gone I feel serene
The sunflower does tower, it implies
A certain peace, my worries lift, I’m cleaned
