It Gets Worse: A collection of essays is written by Shane Dawson. Shane Dawson has a very assiduous personality which can explain how Shane is a director, actor, comedian, musician, and a famous YouTuber (Dawson). Shane Dawson is also the author of I Hate Myselfie. It Gets Worse speaks on Shane’s story of being confused about his sexuality, being terrified to let out his feelings about them since raised and living in a Christian home. Later on in It Gets worse Shane touches upon being forced into going to a new high school in another city due to his parents’ divorce where he experienced bullying. 

Shane and his brother Jerid met after a couple months to catch up, then Jerid brought back the conversation they had fourteen years ago. “You like guys, right?” Jerid asked, ”Ya, But I also like girls.” Shane responded, ”So you like both, who cares?” Jerid argued, “Well…I just wish I didn’t. I wish I could just be straight. Or gay. It’s so confusing to be in the middle” Shane stated (Dawson 14). It Gets Worse touches on many relatable struggles almost every teen could possibly go through, from bullying to being confused about their sexuality, which is why I absolutely loved this book, not only as a fan but as a teen entirely.

Shane shares many stories about his life from high school to having his now ex-girlfriend Lisa and becoming famous on YouTube, but what he mostly speaks on is his high school experience and the struggles he had within it. For instance, Shane talks about being an obese teen where he says what his grandmother told him once “Ya, my grandma gets kinda mean when she misses a pill. One time she told me from far away I look like a bus” (Dawson 26). He also states how he would look way older than he was, how he had few friends, and of course, he speaks of the struggles from coming out as bisexual.

It Gets Worse should be read at least once by everyone, it is a very inspirational book that no one can miss out on, with that said I recommend It Gets Worse for all types of audience, but of course more of a mature age *ages 13+*
