Girl in Disguise, a book that takes place in the 1850s, highlights the life of the first ever- female Pinkerton spy. While a novel focusing on historical events is not my typical read, this is no typical novel. It tells the story of a woman, trying to make a difference, struggling in a world not accepting of her true passion due to the social society standards that prevail. A  whirlwind of mystery, action, thrill, and romance will cause you to consume this page-turning story.

Kate Warne, the sole focus of this novel, starts out as a woman with no money, no husband, and little to no choices when trying to survive on the streets of Chicago. Living in a small home, barely paying rent, Kate Warne makes it her mission to become a detective working for the legendary Allan Pinkerton, head of the Pinkerton Agency. Her quick-witted smarts and flair of cleverness are what land her the job after much debate on whether a woman can handle such a role -- or should be even given such an opportunity.

This book never shows a dull moment, whether it be jealousy from the wife of her boss, or a secret her friend entails that could result in illegal affairs -- Kate Warne has to handle it all. On top of everything, Kate Warne is a woman living in a man's world. With not everyone being accepting of this tremendous shift in their lives, Warne has to do everything and anything to prove her worth. There is no line this fearless and brave soul of a character won't cross. Being the trailblazer for all women to come, Kate has the world on her shoulders, with no one to help lift the weight might I add.

There is no doubt that living alone surrounding yourself with your job can become a lonely lifestyle. Everyone still yearns to be loved, regardless of the circumstances. Craving for a relationship and someone to share her life with is tricky considering her sudden lifestyle.  Warne will keep her eyes open to love and isn’t afraid to flirt a little from time to time in between cases. A dab of romance is just what this novel needs to spark it all up into the brilliance it is.

There is no doubt in my mind whether or not I would recommend this book to anyone. It is clear my answer would be yes! The Girl in Disguise features an empowering woman, changing her life for the better, and making a difference trying to survive. This novel will put you through all the feels, and you will be buckled into a roller coaster you will not be able to stop.
