Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher
Though the beginning wouldn’t give you any sort of hint, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes is an exciting novel with an amazing twist towards the end of the story. Chris Crutcher tells the story of how Eric Calhoun tries to help his best friend Sarah Byrnes, while using daily class discussions about the nature of man, the existence of God, abortion, organized religion and other contemporary issues as a backdrop.
The plot and structure are very good, and the story builds very well. The characters add to the story and without them, it wouldn’t be as interesting. The book gets better as you read more, and the climax is excellent.
This an excellent book that I can safely recommend to almost any teenager, or anyone that loves a good mystery.
