The Hunger Games

This is a great novel written by Suzane Collins which tells a truly inspiring fictional story of a young girl who is facing tremendous problems in her life. This young girls name is Katniss Everdeen. She is living in a society completely controlled by the government which they call the Capitol. The world she lives in is split up into twelve districts after district thirteen was destroyed when they tried to revolt against the capitol. She lives in the twelfth district which is very poor and considered one of the worst districts. This district is one which focuses mainly on coal mining and most people have trouble getting by.

Katniss has lived in a poor family through her life and she has had to learn many things just to get by. Her father was a very skilled hunter and brought her beyond the boundaries to hunt with him. He had showed her how to hunt with a bow and arrow. She was slowly becoming very skilled with the small bow that her father had made for her. She had really enjoyed this quality time spent with her father. Until one day when her father was blown up by on bomb while working in the mines. He was killed by this and Katniss and her mother and sister, Prim, were devastated. Her mother was sent into a very deep depression and was no help to the family at all. So Katniss had to take control and put food on the table. She then began to hunt in the woods by herself and became extremely skilled and then started trading with people her father had known. She was doing a great providing for her family at such a young age.

But there was one pivotal problem which was coming in her life that happens once every year. This is the event which is called, The Hunger Games. This is set up by the Capitol ever since the districts tried to revolt. It is a very deadly event which all districts must participate in. Each district must have one male and one female tribute between the ages of twelve and eighteen. These tributes are selected randomly and cannot refuse to take this spot but someone may volunteer for them. This is a hated event by all people and will change the life of Katniss and her family forever.

I believe that the outstanding use of action and suspense made this such a great book. There are many great unexpected plot twists which occur that cause you to never want to out the book down. When I got to the main action I couldn't stop reading and read over two hundred pages without stopping and I didn't get bored once. This is one of those books that you will never forget and you can read over and over again and still enjoy it every time. That is what you need to have a great book and this is one book that I would consider great.
