The Fault in Our Stars Review by John Green
“Oh, I wouldn’t mind, Hazel Grace. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you.” The Fault in Our Stars is a young adult novel written by John Green that will have you laughing at one point, and then bawling your eyes out the next. This New York Times number one bestseller follows the love story of two teens, Hazel Grace Lancaster, who is sick with cancer and Augustus Waters, an amputee due to cancer he once had. The Fault in Our Stars has a wonderful plot, amazing characters that you sympathize for and connect to, and parts that just pull at your emotional strings.
The story begins with Hazel going to attend a cancer support group, to deal with her “depression”, according to her parents. There she meets Augustus, and instantly Augustus falls in love with her. His charm and persistence cause Hazel to eventually fall for him, thus beginning their romance. Their love takes them to places they’ve never been and even as far as the Netherlands. The book has moments in the story that will cause you to laugh, question your existence, and curl up into a ball and cry.
The characters in The Fault in Our Stars are extremely relatable to and make the book to be as good as it is. Hazel, the main protagonist of the story, is a 16 year-old girl who loves to read and watch America’s Next Top Model. Augustus, a 17 year-old boy, used to play basketball before he lost his leg and also appreciates the literary arts and video games. You instantly fall in love with them, and you end up wanting their love to continue. They begin to grow on you, and once you finish the book, you realize that they’re only fictional characters. The book causes you to sympathize for and with them since you are with them through all their great and harder times.
When you read TFIOS, you will find yourself laughing a lot, but also crying a lot. It’s better to not reveal what causes you to cry, but it will happen, quite a few times. When you finish the book, you will find yourself in the corner of your room, with your hands on your knees, rocking back and forth with tears all over the place. Make sure to have a box of tissues with you at all times when you read The Fault in Our Stars, because they will definitely be needed.
The Fault in Our Stars could easily be your number one favorite. You will embark on the adventures of Hazel and Augustus. You will laugh with them, cry with them, feel their pain, and think deeply with them. It is definitely a book that you should pick up. When you find yourself reading until three in the morning or finishing the book within 24 hours, you know that The Fault in Our Stars is definitely worth the read. It is a book that you will read over and over again, feeling everything you did when you read it the first time.
