“Homeless person or business person, doctor or teacher, whatever your background may be, the same holds true for each of us: life takes on the meaning that you give it.” -Breaking Night

The book Breaking Night is an autobiographical memoir written by Liz Murray. It is the story of Liz’s life growing up in the Bronx. Her parents were not a good influence on her as a kid, and she grew up with both parents addicted to drugs. She was often made fun of at school for her poor hygiene, and at one point her head was crawling with lice. She would stop going to school for periods of time and ended up in a group home for homeless girls. After a childhood full of pain, Liz’s mother died of AIDS. Liz decided to get her life back together and go back to school. She fit 4 years of missed highschool into just 2. After much hard work, perseverance, and drive, Liz makes it into Harvard.

I enjoyed this book because it had a strong message. It was an easy book to read and I was able to get absorbed into the story.  Liz’s character is well developed and she is likable.

Breaking Night is a very inspiring book and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good motivational read.
