Anthem by Ayn Rand
In today's world we have the freedom to express our opinions and thoughts freely, its normal for one to say what we would like to say and be what we would like to be, but Anthem provides a different type of perspective with a collectivist dictatorship world. A curious and intelligent mind whom fell under the spell of this society goes through the realization of the truth that has been hiding.
Although there was a big limitation in society this never stopped Equality's curiosity to wander off, Equality 7-2521 writes in his journal as he sits alone in a disused railway tunnel. Thinking for one’s self has been outlawed in his collectivist society, and he always refers to himself using the pronoun “we” .Equality 7-2521 is described as a tall, strong, and a curious man all of these qualities are what sets him apart from his peers, this making him considers such qualities are a curse. The City, which is part of larger society controlled by the World Council, stresses the importance of 'We,' not individuals. In Equality 7-2521's world, every part of life is controlled.
Throughout the story one could tell he change of emotions on society in Equality 7-2521, like a fish swimming upstream Equality presently changes his point of view on what he had been instructed all his life, making an attempt to breakfree on what appears to be the impossible. Equality involves the conclusion that the council is inaccurate in their judgments, and calls them, thrice-damned fools, for not accepting his power. After recreating the power of electricity, with the astounding invention from the Unmentionable Times, Equality 7-2521 concludes that the invention is not a sin, but the foundation for a prosperous mankind.
At this point in the story we see a different idea or point of view of what was once given by Equality has changed. What once was what he grew up with had now been something he was trying to break free of. Realizing how limited freedom was, his invention was so important to him he was willing to go against everything he had been accustomed of. Having high hopes and dreams only wanting to make the society a better place his intelligence was despised. I don't know about others but only hearing this is saddening, living in a world where only the importance of others matters, no one dares to say anything in fear of what could come Equality manages to escape what was this prison and runs away to a forest that holds peace.
Who could ever have such motivation? He held very dear what was his invention and of course the golden one giving him company and hope when no one would.Equality 7-2521 is attracted to a girl named Liberty 5-3000 who works in the Home of the Peasants. Equality 7-2521 gives Liberty 5-300 the name, of the Golden One.One day, Equality 7-2521 tells the Golden One of his true feelings/attraction to her. Following this one night, Equality 7-2521 recalls a childhood memory of watching a Transgressor of the Unspoken Word being publicly burned at the stake. With that he remembers the sinner’s courage and poise, reminiscent of a proud saint.
Who would have gone so far for such little? Equality was different from others but in his world you only went my the path they had given you. It was his curious mind that made him realize all of the lies that were bashed in their heads. Some may think he had no reason to run for now he will always be on the run, but its minds like his that are hated in a society like that. Those who realize the truth and think outside of the box, those who swim upstream with no fear. His mind and a companion was all he needed to break free.
