Most of the time, movies about space and the beyond are cheesy and the same. Christopher Nolan’s film “Interstellar” paints a meaningful picture of a world 50 years from now. Taking place in the year 2070, Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey, is given the task to save the dust-ridden world. Nolan’s ideas were perfectly displayed by his film and production crew. Using dark tones in space and light tones on land allows for the audience to feel immersed in space.

The effects and soundtrack used in Interstellar allows the viewer to feel immersed inside the space pod and each unknown planet. Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack in the movie gives the viewer a more intense feeling at parts that would normally feel dull or slow. His repetition in some of the music allows those watching to connect different scenes to each other and creates suspense among the whole movie. For instance, when Murph (Cooper’s daughter) is playing in her room, dust falls on the floor, but in a specific pattern. Here, a soft meledy starts to play making a sandy bedroom feel more important then it would initially appear.

Christopher Nolan's crew, lead by Hoyte Van Hoytema, was what really put the movie in it's own separate category. Using wide angle lens to give the feeling of tight angles and spaces in places that would normally seem much larger allowed the viewer to feel claustrophobic. To add, with over half of the movie taking place on planets and ground, the production crew is able to film this in real locations, most of the film taking place in the Iceland Glaciers or Alberta, Canada. By having this ability, it give the film a stronger credibility. To add, Hoytema uses lens that allows his crew to capture a macro shot on some of these worlds, and get a wide view on what these planets intail.

Nolan’s casting picks were spot on. Putting a big names like Matthew McConaughey (playing Cooper), Anne Hathaway (playing Brand), and Matt Damon (playing Mann) allows the movie to develop a serious feel early on in the film. By casting these actors, the audience is able to feel more connected to movie because of the past roles they have played, such as Damon’s roles in the Jason Bourne movies.

Nolan’s work has always been astonishing. His past films such as Batman: The Dark Knight Rises and Inception, that has beautiful textures in the landscapes and exciting, action-packed moments. Taking on a movie about space was completely different from what we are used to from Nolan. But, his new take on philosophy of space and what is really possible is something new and refreshing that sparks questions about the film

Although Interstellar was a phenomenal film, there was some issues. For instance, the first hour of the film was more backstory then it was the plot, which is needed and a crucial part of the film, but it lost my interest. To explain, Cooper and his family are farmers in Colorado. But, farming has become a difficult lifestyle because of the lack of crop there is to harvest and the constant dust storms that have taken over earth. While farming Cooper and his family find a drone used by NASA which leads them to NASA’s secret base in the mountains. Here, Cooper is given the details about the last space mission on earth and the plan to save the world. This is essentially the whole first hour of a three hour movie. Obviously there is a little more than revealed that are key elements to the plot, but it seems to have more substance than the film needs to have about earth and it's dying environment.

‘Interstellar’ directed by Christopher Nolan, filled with action and suspense, dashed with an excellent soundtrack and camerawork. The concepts that Nolan displays in the film, coincided with a beautiful stage set makes interstellar one of the best space movies I have ever seen. With all of this considered, I would give Interstellar a 5 out of 5.
