Imagine living in a world where you could not walk through the doors of a public school because of the color of your skin. Now imagine if you did and people would taunt, spit, or harass you as you walk to school.

In the 1998 Disney original movie Ruby Bridges she becomes the first African-American child to desegregate and all white elementary school in New Orleans. Ruby undergoes extremely harsh treatment from the people in the south because they believe that black and white children should go to school separately. Members of the NAACP come together to send 3 black student to and all white school in New Orleans. When the whites found out there children were going to attend school with and African-American they were furious. They went into the school and took their children out because they felt as if at this age they were way too young to integrate.

Ruby Bridges is a civil rights icon who was the first African-American to integrate William T. Frantz Elementary school in New Orleans. Racism was very prevalent during this time. White mobs taunted Ruby to try to scare her away but Ruby proved to be a soldier when she constantly walked through those doors every day to prove to those people that she was a strong warrior who is not going to back down. She quickly became the only person in the school and the strong feeling of loneliness took over. It was very hard for Ruby but she continued to fight through it because nevertheless she highly enjoyed her new school and her teacher Ms. Henry.

Personally I really enjoyed this movie of Ruby Bridges. I am very intrigued by the Civil Rights era and movement in the south. This has a personal connection for me also being an African-American in the United States because my mom who is of mixed race was born In Philadelphia by a white women who was coming from the South because she was afraid to give birth to an African-American baby in the south at that time. Ruby Bridges is a very formal experience you can easily get attached to the screen because of the fantastic storyline. The movie will definitely leave a huge impact once you are finish watching.

Race plays such and amazing part in today’s society. With a lot of killings and shootings going on this movie will open up a lot of eyes and turn a lot of hearts around. Ruby Bridges is still alive today she has written many books and does seminars and uses different resources to reach a mass audience. Her story is especially amazing for little girls and people who feel or are treated differently because of their uniqueness or special attributes. Race is something we need to be aware of because of the many racial issues concerning our society.

Ruby Bridges by Disney proves to be a classic must see for all ages. The movie is a huge opener for prejudice people because it shows them how what they do continues to affect people in their everyday lives.
