The Beauty That Is Spring Day

On February 13, 2017, BTS released an album titled “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and on this album, there was a song titled “Spring Day”, which to date is one of their most popular singles still charting on Melon (a Korean music streaming service). BTS has said that “Spring Day” is about love, yearning for the past, and loss (they said this in an interview with Esquire). This can all be seen in their lyrics. Many fans speculate that the song is also about the sinking of the Sewol ferry where more than 300 people died (250 were students who went on a trip) due to the ferry being unbalanced.

Upon first listening and analyzing, I fell in love with the lyrics that are almost poetic. The lyrics we can assume are about a person missing and longing for their friend. My favorite lines are at the beginning of the song when RM sings “너무 야속한 시간 나는 우리가 밉다 이제 얼굴 한 번 보는 것 조차 힘들어진 우리가” (“time is too cruel I hate us- us who now became to find it difficult to see each other even for once”)  then he later goes on to say “이 겨울을 끝내고파 그리움들이 얼마나 눈처럼 내려야 그 봄날이 올까” (“I wish to end this winter how much longings must fall like snow before that spring day arrives”). Through the lyrics that RM sings, we can tell that he misses his friend and hates how time has separated them. He yearns for them and wishes for  “winter” (which is an analogy used throughout the whole song that relates to an emotion) to end.

I absolutely love how throughout this whole song they use the weather as a metaphor for their emotions. Winter is one of the most heartbreaking metaphors in the song to me. This is because the coldness of wintertime is being referred to as loneliness which is a relatable topic for many. The feeling of being alone makes you feel cold (like winter) and all you can do is wait until this feeling of loneliness goes away if it ever does and you finally find happiness. Finding this happiness and need for no longer yearning is the spring day that is mentioned throughout the whole song since spring is warm and bright.

All in all, I love BTS’ music for its deep meaning and relatability. “Spring Day” is a song that captures all of BTS’ strengths like writing, production, and having their audience relate even though he may not understand. I love this song and especially RM’s verse since he is able to capture a plethora of emotions and use the imagery in a way so poetically that it makes me fall more and more in love with the song. The more I listen to this song the more I am able to uncover the greatness of their message and meaning.
