Would you choose to become a drug dealer to make money?  Breaking Bad, created by Vince Gilligan, is a show about a high school science teacher, Walter White, that turns to cooking meth after finding out he has lung cancer.  He decided to do this so that he can pay for his treatment and his family’s needs if he dies.  Breaking Bad portrays Walter’s shift in character as he went from a charismatic and caring father to a cold-blooded drug king through his wrong decisions.  Walter wanted only to be a hero, but his idea to become a meth cook led to many problems for him, the people around him, and his family.  Although Walter wanted to become a hero, instead, he portrayed a change in character for the worse and made many selfish decisions to inflict pain for the people around him.

It all started when Walter’s police brother-in-law, Hank, decided to take Walter on a police ride along to a drug bust.  At the location, Hank tells Walter to stay in the police car to stay safe.  There, he notices a man, Jesse Pinkman, escape the scene while the police are searching the house.  Jesse Pinkman was the man the police were after, and he was also a former student of Walter.  Walter, instead of yelling and reporting him to the police, decides to let him go as he knows him and decides to give him a second chance.  Later on, Walter decides to pair up with his former student to become a Meth cook.  He knew that Jesse had no choice because his options were to either partner up with Walter or get reported by him and go to jail.  Walter knew that his cancer was going to kill him eventually, so he decided to find a way to make enough money so that his family didn’t have to pay for the cancer treatment.  Their partnership had ups and downs, such as when they were able to cook their first batch or having to experience deaths of close people.  Although Walter was making large amounts of money to give to his family, the expected results happened.  

If you do something illegal enough times, eventually you are going to get some form of consequences.  Walter knows he can’t control other people, but he tries anyway, nevertheless failing.  Walter’s behavior plays a huge role in the success of the show because it portrays a characteristic that everybody has in them.  Since Walter was so selfish, he let people that he didn’t care about die just because they bothered him or were in the way of his profits.  Although Walter was trying to make the money for a good cause, the destruction that he had caused cost way more.  

In conclusion, Breaking Bad was an immaculate show that really helped me understand that doing something bad for a good cause will most likely not end up nicely.  Walter shows this vividly when he is the leading cause to deaths that eventually lead back to him.  I give this show a 9.5 out of 10 because of how good most of the seasons were.  There was non-stop action and I was always on the edge of my seat.  I didn’t give this show a 10 out of 10 because in the beginning, the show had to gradually introduce all of the characters before starting the action, similar to the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”.  Vince Gilligan did an amazing job creating this show and I wouldn’t change a thing about it.
