When we live, we are all told

That there will come a time,

When we are left alone

To wait,

And stand, restless

Because nothing will ever become clear.

But what is ever clear?

We are not told

Why we are always so restless,

And why the slowest thing is time-

And why we are left to wait,

All alone.

But humanity was not meant to be alone.

But why is not unclear,

Because it’s so hard to wait,

Especially when we are told,

That the thing of essence is time,

And that is when we become restless.

And then we get hopelessly restless,

And it gets the best of us when we are alone

For that unending time,

When everything seems unclear

Because we’d never gotten told

That we just need to wait.

And wait.

And while we still may get restless,

We will still wait to be told-

Even when we are alone

Because it’s always worth the wait, even when it’s not clear,

Because it is important, this… time.

And we cannot function without time

Because then, there is no wait

For the idea of things becoming clear

In which we would again, get restless-

And alone

And we forget everything we were told.

Because the one thing that is never clear, is that of time

When we are told to wait,

And all the while, we grow more restless, and alone.

The author's comments:

My poem is a Sestina, which I fell in love with when I first learned what it was. This Restless Time is about the uncertainty of time and the fear of the unknown. Inspired by the fact that we cannot see what is ahead of us, and we have no idea what the next seconds, minutes, days or hours will bring.
