Serve and Defend
Daddy signed his name,
Then he got the call.
They said,
“We need you no sergeant. There’s no one let at all.”
He told mommy he was off to serve and defend,
To fight up until the very end.
Yet mommy stood there in a cry
And I didn’t understand why.
Daddy was a strong, hardworking man,
Doing more before nine
Than you’ll do in your lifetime.
He told me it was his duty,
But he’d make it home as soon as he can.
Mommy was lost,
She know what was at stake, the cost-
It had up me
And our family.
The phone rang once more.
Mommy’s heart raced in the very core.
Daddy was homeward bound,
Safe and sound.
