The Mask
So close, yet so far
I’m here, yet I’m not
In body, but not in mind
I’m alive, but not well
Emotionally and physical
I’m a wreck, undeserving
Of your attention, and yet
Here you are, by my side
I look at myself, and
See nothing but a worthless
Pile of flesh. I wonder
What you see underneath
Can you tell what’s behind?
The happy mask or is it the
Mask that makes you stay,
And if it leaves, so will you?
How can I tell you who I am?
If you keep telling me I’m
Wrong about myself,
What is it you see?
My mask it the happy one,
Funny, caring, the one you love,
But the real me is trapped away,
Where I hope you can’t find it
So I’ll still laugh, and smile
But I hope you know, you fell
In love with a mask, a
Hard, cold, unforgiving mask.
