instruments lying, waiting
the chandelier dims
clap! Conductor, take your bow
and begin those epic German arias--
of Woton sending Brünnhilde
to sleep beneath a bed of flames.
the glamorous lead laments her tragedy
reflected in the tear-blue of her dress and jewels
oh yes, it is a glorious saturday tonight,
despite the kicking, cranky tourists
jammed into the standing gallery.
They had not supposed, 'comfortable shoes'
is more than you need to remain standing
when Wagner comes to Vienna.
