I am beige
I Am Beige
I am beige.
Not like the sand everyone loves to make castles out of,
Not like sweet drizzling caramel that everyone simply cannot resist,
But like the dull walls of an adequate apartment.
Dependable, responsible
Dark enough to not be damaged by trivial matters,
But light enough to be permanently damaged by more stubborn stains.
I will never be that highlighter-yellow.
Gosh I would hate to be that.
Always so brightly shining-
So bright you go blind,
Annoyingly standing out so it soaks up every last drop of attention.
I thought I was a baby-blue.
Blue like the sky that has no limit.
Blue like the soothing waters of Puerto Rico.
Just like the waters and the sky I would never hide my true emotions.
Somedays sunny, others with a depressing downpour,
Or some days with no wave in sight and others with vengeful crashes of waves.
It was when my dad asked me “ what do you do for you,”
And I responded with an uncertain silence that I realized
I am no baby-blue.
Baby blues have passion,
With their vibrant- but not too annoyingly vibrant- hue
My passion lies in my chores,
My passion lies within people- a tricky gamble.
However, a true, fiery passion to please just myself-
Is as empty and dull as a beige.

This poem derived from a conversation I had with my dad one day about " what I do for me?" and this led to a compilation of deep thought-provoking ideas.
