hypothermic hearts
hypothermic hearts
trapped in the frosty haze,
thump on
struggling to break free.
frozen behind rib-cages,
they cling to the last
vestige of warmth,
savoring it before
it withers.
then the cold creeps in,
bitter and sharp
and turns their
thumps
of love into a
numb silence.

I am a rising freshman from North Carolina and an avid writer of poetry, fiction, and everything in between. I wrote this poem about two people who were once in love but are now slowly drifting away from each other. However, this poem doesn't only have to be about relationships-- it could also be about drifting away from your friends, your family, or things that you enjoy, and how that distance feels. It really depends on how you interpret it.
