No indication of the passing of time except
The subtle movement of light across the sky
And the uneven ticking of the tides
In and out
Back and forth
Over and under
The soft breeze
The warm sand
The cool water flowing over bare, sun-worn feet
Constant
Under the slightly overcast sky
Here, where nothing
And everything
Changes
As time moves on
An eternity in an instant
An instant in eternity
The shore between the seas
The sands of time
Of no time
The beach of long ago and time to come
An in-between place
The same
The same
The same
The same
She sell sea shells
Sh, listen
Smell
Hear
Feel
Be
Listen to the slow, steady rhythm
Push and pull you
Rebuild
Erode away
Over and over
Without age
Timeless
Like us
Maybe that’s what draws us
To the shores of forever
Of never
Of once in a million years
Of when pigs fly
Of pie-in-the-sky
Of everyday
Of yesterday
Of ordinary
Extraordinary
The sea is was will be
Like me
Like you
Like whoever has ever
Dreamed imagined hoped wondered though questioned created
To them
To us
The sea gives its steadiness
Unpredictability
Power
Destruction
Creation
Beauty
Rhythm
And asks in return
Only for
Us

I wrote this sitting on the beach in southern California, listening to the beating of the waves.
