The Destruction of my Body and Soul
The gunshot burning into my back,
Leaving behind its mark on my falling body.
A reminder of what I attempted
And of what I left behind.
A racist town,
Full of people that made me go to jail,
That made an innocent person go to jail.
A person who was as innocent as a mockingbird.
As my body fell on the dusty, muddy ground,
I couldn’t help but feel relief.
This was freedom, but an unfair one at that.
My explanation,
Even though it was as detailed as any of the Ewells’ ones were,
Was disregarded. Ignored.
