First Shooting Star
Straddling the end of October
and the start of November
We’re huddled together
accompanied by the ocean
and the occasional
early morning joggers.
Arms wrapped around me tight
immersed in your body heat;
your shoes warming my feet.
Catalina’s lights gleam like gold
onto our thoughts that have
drifted off with the tide;
unspoken
lost to distant shores
my teeth chattered as we admired
the sky’s twinkling freckles.
Our fingers traced the constellations
in all the wrong places.
Two newly acquainted strangers
both so far from home
indulging in each others presence;
growing familiar with our mouths
as the first shooting star I’ve ever seen
began its rapid dissent
into the calm, silent sky
a void of nothingness.
