The Tunnel
What is hope but a glimmer of the way out the door,
a reflection of light
from confetti on the floor,
a reminder of the party,
a depressing sad tone
sung by those who take comfort in death's home
it is a cause taken up,
sung by those who know it's hopeless
and see no light to lead them out
it comes from a small match,
cast aside,
relit for warmth and light,
but no light comes from the flame, only burns
and as they look around for guidance,
eyes closed and will abandoned,
the fallen stumble out and into the cold
they are blinded by the light,
and yet they cry and they still fight,
for now they hear, now they know, they were not alone
but it wasn't hope that got them through
not light or warmth
it was the strength of understanding, it was you.
