&ldquo;Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.&rdquo;<br /> ― Kurt Vonnegut

When I look at the faces in the photographs
They look so infinitely tired.
Hands up
Black and white.
Guns pointed at their tailbones.
So tired of life
Yet desperately wanting to live.
Tired of
Insomnia and fear.
Tired of scalding throats screaming
But not being heard.
Never being heard.
Purple bags in the hollows of eyes
Plum colored and soft.
Seeing children’s faces mutilated by fear and confusion.
This is the ultimate pain.
This is the ultimate defeat.
Wanting to sink into the deep crumbly soil.
Never see that twisted, scared face again.
Of their child.
Of their baby.
They are so infinitely tired.

I was inspired by a picture in my history textbook. It showed Jewish children and mothers being taken to concentration camps. I looked at that picture for a long, long time.
