Immortal Desire
She could feel
the glimmer of hope
gradually spreading quicker,
as her footsteps drew her nearer
to the object of her dreams,
the toy she yearned for and
devoted each waking moment,
each desperate breath
to planning a better life
with her new possession.
Each visit to the mall, she'd spend
by walking past the display.
Eyes lit, she held the box in awe,
fingers gripping the edges and heart racing.
A pulverizing pang of dismay
familiarly pounded in her;
and with joyous spirits weakened,
she returned the toy to its shelf.
The sadness dropped to her feet
and she dragged her heavy shoes
across the floor, out the store.
Howbeit her vivacity was restored,
as she dearly hugged a long-awaited Christmas present.
Then, as soon as she had rejoiced,
she was plunged back into sorrow
with the renewed lust for another toy,
convinced that this novelty surely exceeded the last.
With the same glimmering eyes years later,
she blankly stares at her computer screen,
sighing heavily with an upset mind and
a vacillating heart,
which only beat for the hopes of a response
from someone special.
Yet she could also feel
a pulverizing pang of dismay
familiarly pounding away her spirits,
but bringing her closer to the realization
that once he knew he had her heart
his lust withered while hers flourished,
his reluctance leaving her perturbed.
Then, she understood
that desire is immortal,
that we always want
what we cannot have;
once we do have what we want,
we no longer want it anymore.
