"Stay gold." -The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

count your diamonds up, he said
guard the gleaming jewels in your head
because when you arrive, the world will be alive
and it likes to steal
but it can't break steel

and his words were sticks in the sand
they drew pictures that faded
with the kiss of the seas that stirred me
belief was the key
it fit my lock perfectly

and my hands are bare
of my rings, pretty things, now i'm scared
in my book of life swiftly creeps a tear
i burn in the glare
i have not been spared

count your diamonds, why?
but too late comes my cry
now the night is nigh
my defense is a lie
make a wish, say goodbye

I like to write poems that are clear enough to convey a story yet ambiguous enough to have possible interpretations. But I'll admit that this one is about entering some kind of strange new world- not a fantastical one, but a stage or state in reality.
