Innocence
I know a woman who used to be a girl
And she’s got a little girl now
She keeps her baby’s hair in curls
Like the ones she used to know
She used to paint the prettiest pictures
Now she paints her pretty face
Her hair used to be all golden ringlets
Now it just hangs straight
She had a laugh that stopped the world
And she smiled as they stared
But one day her joy was stolen
And the world just disappeared
Though all her dreams were bigger than she was
Her hope was a burning sun
So she danced and smiled and remembered
Waiting for her chance to come
But then the girl met a boy
That walked and talked like a man
He fixed his lust to look like love
And the foolish girl jumped in
She did not come back up the same
Round belly and eyes clearer
She had lived the life of a woman
But it was a girl she saw in the mirror
And the boy was just the shell of a man
Saying things he did not mean
He turned young girls into women
Then washed his red hands clean
So the girl became a mother
Before she learned to be a woman
And though she was afraid
She suddenly stopped running
Now I know a woman who used to be a girl
And she’s got a little girl now
She keeps her baby’s hair in the curls
That used to be her own
