Invent Us
Long before words bloomed from
Our parched brown lips we made a
Show of emotions and motions
And words made a game of teasing us
Catching on the fringes of our
Thoughts, emotions, smiles,
And wrapping everything in a bundle
Till it all fell into gorge in a rush
Something like a hunger consuming us
Each flickering of thought—metamorphism
A catharsis rushing on ahead with words
Words molding us as inventions
Rolling together
Mashing words against teeth and
Grinding tongue against thoughts
Long before words spewed like
Turret hoses. Each notion was worth a while
Delicately selected from the
Puddle of letters and dropped into
Our eager dancing ears
Each thought minimized to reach a
maximum and everything carefully edited
To leave no mistake. Utterance was a cloth to
heal the wound. Now, helplessly,
Now it is a dagger slashed in and drawn out.
Emotions cleansed away
Words pour out of our mouths like rain
Forming puddles, flooding us all.
We have not yet drowned.
But I am so thirsty and words fall like
hail asking us when we will allow them
To invent us again
