I wish that summer would come to an end.
I wish that the heat would disappear into a brutal cold.
I wish the horseflies would fall and turn into graves made of their own skin.
I wish for the bees and ants to hibernate instead of biting my ankles.
I wish that I could finally see her.

I watch the leaves turn and crumble at the beginning of Autumn.
I watch the grass cringe as it slowly fades with time.
I watch my step as I walked through the checkered yard of graves.
I watch the way she stepped onto the sidewalk.
I watch how the edges of her lips curled into a smile when she saw me.

I regret wishing for the autumn I loved.
I regret that I didn’t save the horseflies and grass before they wrinkled with age.
I regret that I stepped on the leaves, for they were alive once, too.
I regret not ever speaking to her,
I regret not coming to her funeral.
