Where I'm From
I am from dirt
(as dark as the night sky).
I am from the snake like rows.
Leafy green outside, golden inside.
I am from the free, untouched country
that has no end, nor beginning.
I am not from concrete
(as engulfing as death).
I am not from the crowded, stained streets.
Unsafe outside after dark, children kept inside.
I am not from the streets of crime
that has no guilt, nor punishment.
I am able to fill my lungs with fresh air
(as clean as untouched paper).
I am able to inhale the sharp manure,
Crusty outside, natural fragrance inside.
I am able to touch the softness of an animal’s coat
without desire to kill, nor hurt.
