Cling to Joy
A certain crispness hangs in the air
frost has painted icy patterns
on every leaf, blade and pettal.
We walk along the path set for us
the colors around us changing.
We walk past fallen leaves,
empty trees, unsaid words hanging in the air.
The path we take together
is broken, hanging together by threads
But that thread is unraveling
gaining speed as each day we
get deeper and deeper into this mess.
Everyday you pretend you pretend you did nothing,
everyday you pretend that we
are still who we were a year ago.
But a year ago we still told eachother secrets
A year ago we still laughed.
A year ago, we didn't cling to little drops
of joy like the last days of summer.
But I think I know the reason,
why we feel like we're chained.
A year ago we were different.
I want to know when we made that switch.
When did giggles and laughter turn to stone cold faces?
When did fists clench to hold back tears?
When did anger begin to boil?
When did eyes no longer glitter
when we smiled?
When did we begin to put on masks?
Let lies slip from our tongues?
When did we put a wall
between one another?
When did every action and word
begin to feel forced and fake?
A year ago we still told each other secrets.
A year ago we still laughed.
A year ago, we didn't cling to little drops
of joy like the last days of summer.
A year ago, we weren't avoiding eye contact.
