Michelle
Hi
My name is Michelle
You probably don't know me
That's okay
A lot of people don't know me
But he did
He always did
When I looked in that mirror
I didn't see anything worth looking at
But he pulled me aside
And said he would be my mirror
He would tell me about my ebony skin
And my almond eyes
And my beautiful face
So that stupid mirror couldn't say a thing
When they told me I was a bastard
He leaned in and whispered
"They don't see the world the same way we do-
Because wholeness wouldn't mean anything without people like us"
When I had to run because my dad had been playing with liquid fire
He took me into his strong arms
And said the even the best need a place to escape
He was the best
And I guess because he was the best
He needed a special escape
I guess he needed to escape where no one could find him
Not even me
Because every time someone called him a bastard
Or told him he wouldn't be good enough
Or said he was ugly
Or broke his heart
He had no one to run to-
No escape
And I didn't see it
Until it was too late
I bet they're laughing now
