If ever I found myself feeling cold

I’d wrap in the homely fleece of this sweater

Its familiar intricacies comforting in the face of a foreign situation

I wore it so very often, though

That the fabric to frayed and unraveled;

But this sweaters security preceded its condition

So I continued to dress in it–

Scared to let go of the safety provided in its soft, knit arms

The unwearable garment now lies obsolete

In a closet

or drawer

or some other storage

Without it I don’t find myself stagnant;

Afraid to move about the icy winter without its security

But instead liberated

As I experience the elements– balmy or frigid

That make up the seasons of life.

I wrote this piece as a symbol for moving through the seasons of life and the difficulty that the process of leaving a particular season may bring.
